ePlan - WAN

Three years ago the Wisconsin Angel Network was founded with the mission of helping fuel the growth of early-stage capital. With the help of partners, private sponsors and volunteers the Wisconsin Angel Network will continue to fuel the growth of capital markets. This month we take a look back at 2007, next month we preview the year to come.

Review of 2007: Making Capital Connections

Deal-flow Pipeline
The Deal-flow Pipeline (DFP) is the meeting point for entrepreneurs and investors. More than 160 executive summaries have been posted by Wisconsin entrepreneurs looking for equity financing. WAN's 26 investor-member organizations have access to the site, representing more than 250 investors and hundreds of millions of dollars under management.

I-Q Corridor Investors' Symposium
The inaugural I-Q Corridor Investors' Symposium was held at UW-River Falls on October 3. About 200 investors, community leaders and business professionals gathered to discuss collaboration between Minnesota and Wisconsin. The event concluded with an evening reception featuring Governor Jim Doyle and a keynote speech by serial entrepreneur Mark Lacek. Follow the links above to on-demand video, download the program manual here, or learn more about the I-Q Corridor by following this link.

Illinois Investors' and Business Forum (ILBIF)
WAN teamed up with the ILBIF to utilize video conferencing technologies to connect investors throughout the I-Q Corridor. Investors watch investment pitches, share deals and learn more about each others' investment interests.

Other Activities Along the I-Q Corridor and Beyond
In order to enhance the connection between investors and entrepreneurs across the I-Q Corridor, WAN participates in a number of regional activities including the Midwest Venture Summit, advising a new on-line connection point in Minnesota called "GetGo", organizing private meetings between investors, and participating in events in the Twin Cities and Chicago.

Nationally, WAN is an active member of the Angel Capital Association, an organization of angel networks committed to enhancing and advocating for early-stage capital throughout the U.S.

Angel Network Formation
The Wisconsin Angel Network helps communities and individuals start angel networks and funds. New networks and funds greatly help Wisconsin's entrepreneurs by increasing the supply of investment capital in the market.

Programming and Events
During 2007 WAN assisted with many programs and events including the Governor's Business Plan Contest, the Entrepreneurs' Conference, the Early Stage Symposium, the Wisconsin Innovation Network, the Midwest Emerging Company Showcase, and Wisconsin's BIO2007 convention pavilion.

Resources
The resource pages on WAN's website host a number of useful tools and links for entrepreneurs and investors. Additions in 2007 included on-demand videos for entrepreneurs covering (click-to-watch) Finance Marketing, Stages of Financing, and Sustainable Competitive Advantage.

Tech Council White Papers
Many recommendations found in the Tech Council White Papers have been enacted in the most recent state budget, including those in investment capital. WAN, its advisory board and members weighed in on the creation of the investment capital white papers, which recommended the expansion of the early-stage investment tax credits and the elimination of the capital gains tax for certain investments. Follow this link to these and other white papers.

Early-Stage Investing Metrics
WAN's monthly Deals Made and yearly Risk Capital Report provide the most comprehensive tracking of Wisconsin early-stage investments. Last year's Risk Capital Report uncovered over $100 million invested in Wisconsin's entrepreneurial companies, click here to download the report. Entrepreneurs are the "jobs engine" of the U.S. economy, click here to download a summary of the latest jobs creation report from ADP. Now that leading indicators show the U.S. is headed for an economic downturn, entrepreneurs are going to need to step up their efforts. Governor Doyle recently announced his administration will continue to stimulate the entrepreneurial economy, follow this link to the details. The Wisconsin Technology Council supports the Governor's initiatives, read more here. If Wisconsin continues the trend of building its entrepreneurial economy, the state will not just weather the storm but will be well positioned for the inevitable rebound.
